The US chip giant Nvidia has signed an agreement with Vietnam to establish an artificial intelligence (AI) R&D center and an AI data center in Vietnam. This marks an important step in the plan to build Hanoi into a tech hub in Southeast Asia.

The agreement involves the expansion of an AI data center owned by the Vietnam Military Telecommunications Group (Viettel). Currently, the group is already using Nvidia's technology. In addition, Nvidia also announced the acquisition of VinBrain, a healthcare startup under Vin, a large Vietnamese group.

The agreement shows the firm confidence of the world's leading AI companies in Vietnam's future as a regional tech hub. Nvidia is confident in the "bright future of AI development in Vietnam." Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang spoke highly of Vietnam's active tech ecosystem, including researchers, startups and business organizations.

Nvidia has been planning to invest in Vietnam for a long time. During a visit to Hanoi at the end of last year, Huang Renxun said Nvidia is committed to investing in Vietnam and making it a "second home." In particular, Nvidia plans to expand its cooperation with Vietnam's top technology companies and help Vietnam cultivate talent in the fields of artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure.

Last year, Nvidia established a partnership with FPT Smart Cloud, a member company of Vietnamese technology group FPT, which is Nvidia's first cloud computing partner in Vietnam. In April this year, FPT announced that it would work with Nvidia to build a $200 million artificial intelligence "factory" using Nvidia's graphics chips and software.

The above activities are all part of Nvidia's expansion efforts in Southeast Asia. Due to the booming digital economy, the demand for data services in the region has soared. According to the latest report, the size of the Southeast Asian market has grown from US$31 billion in 2015 to US$263 billion in 2023
